How is Uruguay’s economy structured?
Uruguay’s economy is broadly diversified and based on agriculture, industry and a growing services sector.
Traditionally, cattle and sheep farming, as well as the production and processing of agricultural goods, have played a major role in the country’s economy. The food industry remains Uruguay’s most important industrial sector. Consequently, meat, wool, leather and agricultural products have long been among the country’s key exports.
Uruguay also has a well-developed chemical and textile industry that contributes significantly to industrial value creation.
The country is a global leader in renewable energy generation and has fundamentally transformed its energy supply system in recent years. The transition toward electric mobility is also becoming increasingly important.
In recent years, the technology and software sector has gained considerable momentum and developed into a dynamic growth industry.
What business opportunities does Uruguay offer?
Uruguay offers business opportunities particularly in renewable energy, energy infrastructure, environmental technologies, and sustainable mobility. The ongoing expansion of energy and transport infrastructure creates opportunities in electric mobility, hydrogen technologies and smart grid infrastructure.
Further opportunities exist in the modernization of industrial production processes and in the agricultural and food industries, especially in efficient and sustainable processing technologies. The rapidly growing software and technology sector also offers potential for cooperation in digitalization, innovation and technology-based services.
Companies additionally benefit from Uruguay’s strategic location and its Mercosur membership, which makes the country an attractive hub for regional business activities. A free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur has been signed and is expected to further facilitate market access between the two regions
