How is Romania’s economy structured?
Romania’s economy is service-oriented. The service sector accounts for around half of GDP, followed by industry, which contributes roughly one-fifth. Agriculture remains one of the largest employers, although it contributes only a small share of GDP. Information and communication technology is a rapidly growing sector. Romanian software developers in particular enjoy an excellent reputation internationally.
Key industrial sectors include mechanical engineering, textiles, mining, wood processing, chemicals, metal processing and the manufacture of vehicles and automotive components. In agriculture, Romania is among the EU’s leading producers of grain, honey, and plums.
Romania’s foreign trade is strongly focused on other EU member states. Both exports and imports are predominantly conducted within the EU. Major exports include machinery and equipment, vehicles and automotive parts, products of the metal, textile and chemical industries, as well as food products and grain.
]: What business opportunities does Romania offer?
Germany is Romania’s most important trading partner. Romania is a promising market for German companies, not least because “Made in Germany” enjoys an outstanding reputation. Romania is the second-largest domestic market in Central and Eastern Europe after Poland and one of the largest markets in the EU.
Manufacturing companies benefit from attractive investment conditions, including comparatively low labor costs and a favorable tax environment. Geographic proximity to European markets, a highly skilled workforce and widespread foreign language proficiency further enhance Romania’s attractiveness.
Particularly strong market potential exists in healthcare, infrastructure development, environmental technologies, agriculture, food processing and increasingly in the defense sector.
German is recognized as a minority language in Romania and numerous schools offer German language diplomas or German-language instruction as foreign or first language.
What are Romania’s economic relations with Bavaria and Germany?
Germany is by far Romania’s most important economic partner. Among Germany’s federal states, Bavaria is Romania’s leading investor and trading partner. The cultural and linguistic ties, particularly in Transylvania, support the further development of close and friendly relations between Bavaria and Romania.
Strong connections exist in mechanical and plant engineering, automotive supply, aerospace, information technology, environmental technologies and energy efficiency. More than 1,000 Bavarian companies maintain business relations with Romania, many of them operating local production facilities or sales subsidiaries.
„Bavaria is not only a significant trade partner for Romania, but also an important driver of investment, innovation, and sustainable development. For over 20 years, we have been professionally supporting Bavarian companies as they enter the market and establish locations in Romania, while maintaining a valuable network for both Bavarian and Romanian businesses.“
