Peru is one of the fastest-growing markets in Latin America. Its economy is primarily based on natural resource extraction, agriculture, fisheries and industry, while tourism is becoming increasingly important. The national currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN).

How is Peru’s economy structured?
Peru’s economy is resource- and export-oriented. Key sectors include mining, oil and gas, agriculture and fisheries, employing roughly one-third of the population. The country also has a growing manufacturing sector, including textiles, chemicals, metal processing and food production.
Tourism contributes significantly to economic development and has become a major industry, especially in the Andes region.
Open-market economic policies, macroeconomic stability, significant natural resources, a sound financial system, foreign exchange reserves, tax reforms and poverty-reduction policies have made Peru an attractive investment destination. Peru currently benefits from 20 free trade agreements with other countries.
What business opportunities does Peru offer?
Business opportunities arise particularly in sectors requiring modernization and investment. These include infrastructure, renewable energy, medical technology and information and communication technologies.
Further opportunities exist in the industrial processing of agricultural products and the expansion of local value chains.
Peru is part of the EU–Colombia–Peru–Ecuador Trade Agreement, which facilitates mutual market access.
What are the economic relations with Bavaria and Germany?
Bavaria and Peru maintain long-standing economic relations. Peru is among Bavaria’s important trading partners in Latin America. Around 360 Bavarian companies conduct business with Peru.
Bavarian exports include machinery, vehicles, electrical engineering products and chemicals. Imports from Peru consist mainly of agricultural products, raw materials, textiles and industrial intermediate goods.
Economic relations are complemented by cooperation in science, research and academic exchange.
