How is India’s economy structured?
India is a dynamic and regionally diverse economy with a strong international orientation. It is characterized by above-average growth and an increasing specialization in high-tech industries and services. Major metropolitan areas such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad have developed into modern service and technology hubs that host multinational corporations, innovative start-ups and a multicultural society.
India also possesses significant mineral resources, many of which are exported. Its most important import partners include China, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and the United States. Key export destinations include the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Europe.
What business opportunities does India offer?
India offers substantial and diverse business opportunities, driven by a rapidly expanding consumer market and an increasingly quality-conscious middle class. Significant opportunities also exist in key industries such as mobility, agricultural technology and pharmaceuticals. These sectors already host numerous subsidiaries of major German companies as well as many Bavarian-Indian joint ventures. From a trade policy perspective, progressive market liberalization, investor-friendly financial policies and the recently concluded trade agreement between the European Union and India are facilitating market entry and continuing to encourage international investment projects.
What are the economic relations with Bavaria and Germany?
Germany is India’s largest trading partner in Europe. The first German-Indian trade agreement was concluded as early as March 1955. In May 2000, the “Agenda for the German-Indian partnership in the 21st century” was signed. Since 2011, the cabinets of both countries have met every two years as part of the German-Indian intergovernmental consultations.
India’s importance as a key trading partner for both Germany and Bavaria is reflected by the presence of many German global companies in India as well as increasing investments by German small and medium-sized enterprises. Currently, around 1,500 Bavarian companies maintain business relationships with India, and approximately 300 Bavarian-Indian joint ventures have been established. Conversely, more than 130 Indian companies have already established their headquarters in Bavaria.
„Established in 2001, the State of Bavaria India Office has served as a trusted bridge between Bavaria and India, fostering innovation, investment, and long-term partnerships. We remain committed to supporting Indian companies in establishing and expanding their presence in Bavaria, Germany, while also enabling Bavarian companies to explore opportunities in India. As both regions continue to emerge as leading hubs of technology, industry, and entrepreneurship, we look forward to strengthening bilateral cooperation and creating new avenues for sustainable growth and collaboration.“
