Hungary has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and has developed into a modern and dynamic business location in Central and Eastern Europe over the past decades. The country boasts a strong industrial base, an increasingly digitalized service sector and well-developed transport and communications infrastructure. Research and development, technological innovation and forward-looking investments are becoming increasingly important, particularly in sectors such as automotive, e-mobility, ICT, medical technology and life sciences. The national currency is the forint (HUF).

How is Hungary’s economy structured?
Hungary is a modern service-based economy with a strong industrial sector. Tourism is an important contributor to economic activity, with Budapest being the country’s most popular destination for international visitors. The highly developed industrial sector is strongly export-oriented, with almost 60 percent of production destined for foreign markets. Manufacturing is dominated by foreign-owned companies, which account for around two thirds of total output and an even larger share of exports.
The key industries are automotive manufacturing, electronics and chemicals. Budapest is the country’s economic center, generating nearly 40 percent of Hungary’s value added. Together with the surrounding Pest County, the region accounts for around half of total economic output. Other important business locations include Győr, Debrecen, Miskolc, Kecskemét, Pécs and Szeged.
Around three quarters of Hungary’s trade is conducted with other EU member states, with Germany by far its most important trading partner. Major export products include machinery and equipment, electronic products, vehicles and automotive components and chemical products. Since 2009, Hungary has consistently recorded a substantial trade surplus. It is one of the most export-oriented economies in the world, with exports of goods and services amounting to almost the country’s entire gross domestic product (GDP).

Insgesamt bietet Ungarn bayerischen Unternehmen weiterhin gute Markt- und Kooperationsmöglichkeiten. Die besten Perspektiven ergeben sich derzeit weniger aus einem breit angelegten Konjunkturaufschwung, sondern vor allem aus gezielten Modernisierungs-, Innovations- und Transformationsbedarfen in Industrie, Energie, Mobilität, Digitalisierung und Infrastruktur.
What are the economic relations with Bavaria and Germany?
Bavaria is Hungary’s most important trading partner among all German federal states.Around 2,300 Bavarian companies maintain business relations with Hungary and approximately 250 Bavarian firms have subsidiaries in the country.
More than 50,000 people in Hungary are employed by Bavarian companies. Conversely, Hungarian investors are also present in Bavaria, particularly in areas such as customer service and assembly operations.
The Bavarian Economic Representation in Hungary is committed to further strengthening Bavaria’s position in Hungary, expanding existing business ties and supporting Bavarian companies in preparing their market entry into Hungary.
