How is the Czech economy structured?
The Czech Republic has a highly developed, export-oriented market economy. Its key industries include chemicals, mechanical engineering, food processing and metallurgy. The automotive industry is the country’s most important export sector and accounts for a significant share of GDP. Overall, the industrial sector contributes nearly one-third of economic output and is closely integrated with German industry. The unemployment rate is among the lowest in the European Union, making the Czech Republic a model economy within the EU. However, regional disparities exist between the economically strong Prague metropolitan area and the northern and eastern regions of the country. Czech policymakers are seeking to further diversify the country’s international economic relations.
What business opportunities does the Czech Republic offer?
The Czech Republic is becoming an increasingly important business partner for Bavarian companies. Its strong focus on the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors aligns perfectly with Bavaria’s economic structure and supports intensive trade relations. Solutions that facilitate automation and the digital networking of production processes are particularly in demand, with the Czech Republic often looking to German standards and experience for guidance.
A vibrant start-up ecosystem has developed, particularly in the major cities of Prague, Brno and Ostrava. Companies with an international outlook have emerged around the technical universities and are actively seeking business partners worldwide. The Czech Republic is among the leaders in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of research expenditure. Many Bavarian companies already benefit from the country’s high concentration of engineers and innovative spirit to develop new products. The Bavarian Business Representation Office and the German-Czech Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DTIHK) are strongly committed to promoting innovation and digitalization.
The Czech Republic is also an attractive market for Bavarian skilled crafts businesses. German quality, service, and efficiency are particularly valued in niche sectors such as high-end interior construction and heritage conservation
What economic relations does the Czech Republic have with Bavaria and Germany?
Economic relations between Germany and the Czech Republic are closely interconnected. Germany is by far the Czech Republic’s most important trading partner. Conversely, the Czech Republic ranks among Germany’s ten largest trading partners and is its second most important trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe after Poland.
The Czech Republic’s main exports are vehicles and electrical products. Germany, in turn, primarily exports products from the automotive, mechanical engineering and electrical equipment sectors.
Bavaria plays a particularly important role in this relationship. The Free State accounts for almost one-quarter of total German-Czech foreign trade, making it the Czech Republic’s most important trading partner among the German federal states. The Czech Republic ranks among Bavaria’s leading trading partners worldwide.
Today, more than 3,000 Bavarian companies maintain business relations with the Czech Republic. Around 350 of them operate local branches, many with their own production facilities. Czech investors are also active in Bavaria.
„From an economic standpoint, Bavaria is by far the most important of all German states for the Czech Republic. For Bavarian companies, in turn, the Czech Republic has become a highly attractive location for their own research and development activities. Furthermore, close cooperation at the political and cultural levels has developed into a genuine, active partnership.“
