Chile is one of the more economically stable countries in South America and is a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The economy is highly export-oriented and largely based on the mining sector. Chile possesses significant natural resources, particularly copper. The national currency is the Chilean Peso.

How is Chile’s economy structured?
Chile’s economy is highly export-oriented and heavily shaped by the mining sector. A significant share of economic output is generated through the extraction and export of natural resources, particularly copper.
Services are becoming increasingly important. Other major export sectors include agricultural products, forestry products and fisheries.
To diversify the economy, Chile is increasingly developing other resources such as lithium while also investing in renewable energy expansion.
What business opportunities does Chile offer?
Chile maintains an extensive network of international trade agreements and is strongly integrated into global trade. An association agreement with the EU has existed since 2003 and was modernized beginning in 2017. In 2025, the new Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) between the EU and Chile entered into force.
Business opportunities exist particularly in mechanical engineering, energy, infrastructure, telecommunications and mining equipment supply.
Additional potential can be found in renewable energy development and the modernization of transportation and urban infrastructure.
What are the economic relations with Bavaria and Germany?
Germany is one of Chile’s key trading partners within the European Union. Chile is also an important partner for Bavaria in Latin America.
