Canada is a member of the G7 and one of the world’s largest economies. While the economy is largely service-oriented, the country’s abundance of natural resources means that the primary sector also plays a significant role. Canada participates in several trade agreements, including agreements with the EU. The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD).

How is Canada’s economy structured?
Canada has an internationally oriented economy and is closely integrated into North American supply chains and global trade flows.
Canada is internationally significant in resource-based industries such as energy (oil and gas), mining and metals, forestry, as well as competitive service sectors including finance and technology. Canada is the world’s second-largest producer of hydropower and exports a considerable share of its electricity.
What business opportunities does Canada offer?
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada has been provisionally applied since 2017. It eliminates most tariffs between Europe and Canada and facilitates market access and investment opportunities.
What are the economic relations with Bavaria and Germany?
Germany primarily imports raw materials and energy from Canada, while exporting machinery, vehicles and chemical products. In 2025, the two countries concluded a raw materials agreement.
Bavaria maintains a particularly close partnership with the Province of Québec. Québec was the first region worldwide to sign an official bilateral cooperation agreement with Bavaria. Since 1989, relations have continuously expanded, and in 1999 Bavaria opened its representation office in Québec. Québec also maintains a representation office in Munich.
In addition to cooperation with Québec, Bavaria’s representation actively promotes economic and scientific exchange with other Canadian provinces, particularly Ontario, and supports bilateral research projects between Bavarian research teams and the National Research Council Canada (NRC).
